Google now uses a new method to index web pages, which is called Google Caffeine. Last year in August 2009, the search engine giant unveiled a new web indexing architecture, and gave it the codename “Caffeine,” and on June 08, 2010, the company announced that it has completed the new web indexing system. In comparison to the previous index system, the brand new index system provides 50 percent faster results for web searches. The company also claimed that it’s the largest collection of web content that it has offered. The updated index system has been introduced to “keep up with the evolution of the web and to meet rising user expectations.”
There were several layers in the old index, and some used to refresh at a much quicker rate than other. Moreover, the update of the main layer used to happen in every couple of weeks. With the completed Google Caffeine Update, the search index is updated on a continuous basis, globally; and the system analyzes the web in small portions. Now, the new pages, and the new information on the existing pages are added straight to the index. Also, the links to the updated, relevant content -- whether from news story, blog, forum post, or more -- is published much quicker in the result pages in comparison to the old indexing system.
If relevant to the search keyword, the new pages will be displayed in Google’s search results much sooner. This update affects only the organic listings, and not sponsored listing.
