Major search engines (Google, Yahoo, Live and Ask)

If you told someone about 25 years back that you would soon be able to find information from any remote corner of the world with a small click of a device called 'the mouse' (of all things), you would have been considered a lunatic.

But today, in 2008, search engines rule our lives. This fact becomes all the more true if we are connected to the internet in any way. Think about it. What would happen in all the search engines were to simply shut off for one day?

The information super highway would go kaput. Users would go crazy. It would mean a complete stand still or a breakdown of the internet machinery. With no search engines to crawl through millions of websites and bring the right web pages to you, you would be as good as a blind mouse in a maze as big as the Amazon.

The bottom line is that a search engine is god today on the internet. So here is a look at the top 4 giants of this colossal world.

  • Google : What started as a research project for two grad students in a university ten years ago has net assets worth US$25.335 billion today. That's Google for you. Now that's what you call a great idea. Google has quickly replaced most other search engines as the most popular and chosen search engine for zillions of net users around the world. Most people attribute this success to the ease of use associated with google. Today the word search is synonymous with google.

  • Yahoo : Yahoo is the first of the search giants and was always number one before google appeared on the scenario. Even today, Yahoo has its own share of followers.
  • Ask : What do you do when you look for information on search engines? You ask a question. Based on this very concept, ask.com has been one of the major search engines in the last few years. Its popularity has suffered somewhat after the arrival of google.
  • Live.com : It wasn't too long before Microsoft entered the race. They launched Live.com in early November 2005 and it has been an intrinsic part of their operations since then.
